My Fresh Squeezin's (Blogger)

Ahh, the freshly squozen thoughts of Dalum. I try to post as often as I can, but sometimes life is just too busy to get stuff out in a reasonable amount of time. Please enjoy my random thoughts and drop me a line if you like.

10/14/2005 08:33:00 AM - Crappy unorganized databases

Work has been great and still is. I have only one issue currently. There is this membership database that has been neglected for about 2 years. The only maintinence to it has been adding of new people. These people have been members and non-members. Someone that sat in the very chair in the last 2 times thought it would be a great idea to just add people that she thought would be good to be in there. These people included straight up donors, local businesses that have given time and supplies, volunteers, some of the stuff, etc... This has caused the membership to become inflated and bloated with data that shouldn't be there. For the past week and a half I've been delegating sections of data to the volunteers and using them as my little task force to getting this thing back into shape. The volunteers range from early 20's to ancient. Selective hearing knows no age. None of them did what I needed to get this thing into shape. Each one had left out, at least, one crucial part of the important stuff from their portions of the list. It would have been nice if they all overlaped with the same stuff that was missing. Each one left out something different. The best part of the work that they did is that they were able to show me which "member(s)" are businesses, acutal members either from 2004 or 2005, or expired. It also uncovered a large portion of people in the list that are unaccounted for. They are just there. No paper trail of what they did or how much they donated. They are just there. So not cool. Also not so cool: Using spaces to adjust the look of text. It's unprofessional, aggravating to fix and bloats the code. If you do this and are working in a professional environment, you better go back to school to do it right or go find another job. Asshats.

Well, it's Friday now. Day 7 of this project. Thank god I'm almost done. Another good thing is that I'm working this weekend. I'll be able to hammer this thing out and have it ready for my presentation to the staff, some of the board and prep it for the CPA. All just in time for a new run of memberships since October to December is the time to start the new membership data of 2006. At least by the time the new membership line starts, I'll have a great front end and infrastructure to get it done the right way with me at the helm. :)
